2. ÝSTANBUL TASARIM BÝENALÝ / 2ND ISTANBUL DESIGN BIENNIAL
NASALO KOKU
SÖZLÜÐÜ

SISSEL TOLAAS

Doðum yeri: Stavanger, Norveç

Merkez: Berlin, Almanya

DICTIONARY OF
SMELL

SISSEL TOLAAS

Born: Stavanger, Norway

Based: Berlin, Germany

Manifesto materials: mapping, a lexicon, smell molecules, and noses

Sissel Tolaas has invented a lexicon for articulating smell that breaks our habit of using visual or material metaphors. These range from more concrete physical smell references such as DOCASA (kebab and perfumes) and CASCA (sweat mixed with old metal of cars) to more conceptual ones such as FREEIS (leisure) or BMAI (allure; bewitching; charm; magnetism). Tolaas invites us to perceive smells without preconceived judgments of “good” or “bad,” thus allowing for a new kind of communication to take place.

For the biennial, Tolaas built on her ongoing research into the “smells of the city,” using three interrelated approaches to smell collection and analysis in Istanbul: “analogue analysis,” (including smell geography and mapping); “chemical analysis,” (using smell collection technology from the perfume industry to collect and synthesize organic smells); and “corpus analysis,” (recording the subjective experience and perception of smell). Shown here, her sitespecific analysis asks: What will be the future of smelling?

This commission for the 2nd Istanbul Design Biennial has been generously supported by Kaðýthane Houseofpaper and IFF International Flavors and Fragrances, with the kind collaboration of Cansu Þekular.
