2. İSTANBUL TASARIM BİENALİ / 2ND ISTANBUL DESIGN BIENNIAL
ALTINCI SOY TÜKENMESİ İÇİN TASARIM

ALEXANDRA DAISY GINSBERG

DESIGNING FOR THE SIXTH EXTINCTION

ALEXANDRA DAISY GINSBERG

Born: London, UK

Based: London, UK

Manifesto materials: forest image (Rewilding Using Synthetic Biology), model slug, patent application drawings, images of synthetic organisms, diagrams

Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg’s Designing for the Sixth Extinction, is a speculative synthetic biology project that questions ideas of progress and highlights the at times troubling interface between design and science.

Ginsberg’s recently published book Synthetic Aesthetics (coauthored with Jane Calvert, Pablo Schyfter, Alistair Elfick, and Drew Endy) is rapidly becoming the textbook for understanding the emerging field of synthetic biology. Synthetic biology combines biological research with tools and approaches borrowed from engineering, such as standardization and modularity, to design and construct new biological parts, devices, and systems for purposes as diverse as medical applications and biofuels.

Designing for the Sixth Extinction, imagines a series of new machines that might repair toxic landscapes and forestall imminent ecological collapse. For the biennial, Ginsberg offers insights into the “ecology” of her own research for one of these machines, a “bioremediating slug.”

Her “synthetic” manifesto, asks multiple “what if?” questions about the implications of bringing together multifarious and potentially contradictory ideas.
