By taking apart complex systems and rebuilding them out of paper, product designer Coralie Gourguechon attempts to demystify technology. Expectations of a better world through technology paradoxically coexist with decreasing public awareness of how technological devices actually function. Our attachment to our digital devices has become market driven and symbolic, tied to updates and operations outside of our control, to marketing and status rather than the use value of electronic devices as tools. Gourguechon’s manifesto is a call to design “electronic and digital objects as tools rather than products.”

To accomplish this goal, Gourguechon proposes three strategies: “learning by making;” “giving transparency to systems;” and “simplifying the fabrication of electronics.” For the biennial, Gourguechon has combined all of these approaches, exhibiting a paper speaker prototype that reveals the basic anatomy of its electronic components, accompanied by a set of “building by coding” instructions, and in so doing asks: How can we achieve a healthier relationship with technology?
