MANIFESTO
EMMET BYRNE AND ALEX DEARMOND
Born: Raleigh and Tucson, USA
Based: Minneapolis, USA
Manifesto materials: large-format vinyl print, various printed materials
Emmet Byrne and Alex DeArmond revisit the “Mundane Science Fiction Manifesto” (MSFM) to see how the form of the design manifesto can be a tool for imagining the future proche (near future). The original MSFM, from 2002 (proposed and then retracted by author Geoff Ryman, Julian Todd, and others)challenged writers to put aside the clichés of the genre (faster than light travel, teleportation, interactions with alien cultures)to instead work within plausible nearfuture speculations. For the biennial Byrne and DeArmond analyze, deconstruct, and reconstruct the original document, creating a graphic kitofparts that can be transported across design disciplines.
Byrne and DeArmond became interested in the MSFM in 2009 and invited designers to respond to the manifesto for the second issue of their occasional Task Newsletter (edited by Byrne, DeArmond, and designer Jon Sueda). This issue of Task has been revisited for the biennial through which Byrne and DeArmond encourage us to ask: “What if not?” rather than “what if?”
