DESIGN ACTIVISM:
A CONTEMPORARY
DESIGN MANIFEST

MANUFAKTURIST AND GOTWOB

Manufakturist: Mia Bogovac, Matea Bronic, Maša Milovac, and Kristina Volf;

GOTWOB: Begüm Çelik and Berk Þimþek

Born: Zagreb, Croatia, and Istanbul, Turkey

Based: Zagreb, Croatia, and Istanbul, Turkey

Manifesto materials: two design studios, two desks, two computers, a file-sharing software, e-mail correspondence, inspirational images, sketches, and more...

In a unique peertopeer exchange, Croatian design studio Manufakturist and Istanbulbased design studio GOTWOB used the biennial as an opportunity to share ideas and influences. Both industrial design studios work with a rigorous process of trial and error. For the biennial, the two studios hosted each other via virtual workstations.

During the build up to the biennial, a computer operated filesharing software developed for Manufakturist occupyied a desk in each parallel studio. Pulling ongoing project data from email correspondence, images, sketches, etc., it created a virtual display. Each studio was able to view the other’s information as a source of inspiration for their work but also as a conversation starter between them, encouraging dialogue and debate. The displays shown here make visible the culmination of this experiment.

As a communicative action this manifesto asks: Can progressive ideas, influences, and inspirations be shared and transformed?
